Navigating the NHS without getting lost
Waiting lists, scattered records, referral black holes. A practical guide to the questions worth asking at every stage of an NHS journey.
By The AYUVA Team
Millions of people are on NHS waiting lists, and for many of them the hardest part is not the wait — it is not knowing what is happening while they wait. Who is holding the referral? How long is the list actually? What can they do in the meantime? The system rarely volunteers answers. You have to ask.
The questions that unblock most journeys
- Where is my referral now? Ask your GP surgery to confirm the date it was sent and where it went.
- What is the realistic wait? Ask for the published target and the current list position.
- What should I do while I wait? Some trusts offer self-management, advice lines and escalation routes.
- Who do I contact if my symptoms change? Write down the right number before you need it, not after.
Keep one record of everything
Letters arrive at different times from different hospitals, and it is easy to lose track of who said what. Keep a single timeline — appointment dates, test dates, what each letter actually said. When a conversation goes wrong, or a referral needs chasing, that timeline is the most valuable thing you own.
You cannot chase what you have not written down.
None of this replaces your clinical team, and none of it is medical advice. It is navigation — the same organising and translating that AYUVA is built to do, available to you before the app even exists.
